Bean Bastard를 한국말로 어떻게 잘 의역할 수 있을까요? 커피 놈? 원두 자식?

나이아가라 폭포로 유명한 뉴욕 주 버펄로에 위치한 Bean Bastard Coffee는 "세계에서 가장 센 커피"라는 캐치프레이즈로 카페인 함량이 높은 커피를 판매하는 Deathwish 외에 마초스러운, 남성적인 느낌이 나는 커피집이 아닐까 싶습니다.

Bean Bastard Coffee is located in Buffalo, NY where you can explore and enjoy Niagara Falls. The name of the coffee shop gives macho-vibe just like Deathwish whose catchphrase is "The world's strongest coffee."

빈 바스타드 커피의 공동 소유자 Nick Mirusso 닉 미 루쏘가 커피 로스터리 이름을 Bean Bastard라고 지은 데에는 그가 커피 로스팅을 시작한 이유와 연관이 있습니다.

The reason why Nick Mirusso named the roastery "Bean Bastard" is somewhat connected to why he started roasting coffee beans.

미국에서 알코올 중독인 사람들이 알코올 의존성을 끝내기 위한 프로그램을 sobriety program이라고 합니다. Crazy Rich Asians의 넷플릭스 티브이쇼 버전인 Bling Empire의 시즌 2를 보면 한국인으로서 미국 가정에 입양되어 자란 Kevin 도 알코올을 끊기 위해 12 Steps 프로그램을 진행하고 있다고 밝히는 장면이 나오죠.

You may know that the sobriety program is for people who would like to break their dependency on alcohol. Kevin Krieger from the Bling Empire-which is the Netflix TV show edition of the movie Crazy Rich Asians- also mentioned that he's on the 12 steps program to stay sober.

아무튼 닉 미 루쏘에게는 원두를 로스팅하는 것이 7년 동안 술에 의존하지 않는 건강한 생활 습관을 유지하고 불안함을 다스리는 방법이었다고 하네요. 커피 로스팅에 빠져든 닉은 가장 처음 Bean Machine이라는 모바일 카페를 운영했다고 합니다. 뉴욕 주의 또 다른 도시 로체스터의 Ugly Duck Cafe 도 모바일 로스터리로 시작한 것과 비슷하죠.

For Nick Mirusso, coffee roasting was his way to re-build a healthy lifestyle and manage his anxiety. He started roasting small-batch then he ran the mobile cafe named "Bean Machine." Ugly Duck Cafe in Rochester, NY is another one that had started as a mobile roastery before having a brick-and-mortar coffee shop.

모바일 로스터리가 점차 자리를 잡아가는가 했더니 또 하필 팬데믹이 터져버립니다. 그는 가만히 있기보다 Fueling the Frontlines라는 프로그램에 참여해서 essential and frontline workers라고 표현되는 코로나 방역 최전선에서 일하는 사람들이나 의료진들에게 커피를 무료로 제공했다고 합니다.

When he couldn't run the Bean Machine due to COVID-19, he participated in the "Fueling the Frontlines" program rather than stop pursuing what he likes to do. The Fueling the Frontlines program was to provide coffees to essential and frontline workers.

그의 커피를 즐기는 사람들이 점차 늘어남에 따라 카페에 대한 꿈을 꾸게 되었고, 투자자를 찾아 Elmwood 빌리지에 그의 첫 카페를 오픈할 수 있었다고 합니다. 엚우드 빌리지는 저번 Butter Block 베이커리 포스팅에서 알려드린 데로, 버팔로에서 가장 artsy 한 동네라 개인적으로 매우 좋아하는 동네입니다. 빈 바스타드 커피에서 커피 한 잔을 사서 날씨 좋은 날 동네 구경하기에 딱이라고나 할까요?

As more and more people enjoyed his coffee, he wanted to have a brick-and-mortar store and luckily, he was able to meet Rich Casey who ended up being his co-owner for the Bean Bastard. Together, they chose Elmwood village which is my favorite town in Buffalo. The village is very artsy and it is a great place to have a walk when the weather is nice.

닉의 취향은 카페 이름뿐 아니라 카페 인테리어, 카페 로고에도 드러납니다. 헤비메탈을 좋아하는 그의 음악 취향은 로고에서 드러나고, 그가 80~ 90년대 즐겼던 것들에 대한 비디오 게임 등은 the nostalgia corner "추억 코너"라고 불리는 카페 한쪽의 인테리어에서도 엿볼 수 있습니다.

Not only the coffee shop name but also the logo and the interior have Nick's personal touches. His love for heavy metal music is incorporated in the logo that looks like a skull. Likewise, his love for the 80~90s things is well represented in the nostalgia corner inside of the coffee shop.

역시, 사람은 자신이 가장 좋아하는 일을 잘 녹여낼 때 다른 사람과 다른 차별점을 가지게 되고 그것이 자기만의 매력이 되는 것 같습니다.

It reminded me of one of the basic branding principles that the brand that well illustrates the love toward the product/service that is well tied with the story of how and why it started differentiates them from other brands.

이제 커피 맛을 한번 볼까요? 저는 비정제 사탕수수 설탕을 첨가한 아이스 콜드 브루, 그는 오트밀 바닐라 라테를 시켰답니다. 콜드 브루는 너무 쓰지 않아 좋았는데, 오트밀 바닐라 라테는 오트밀 우유 자체가 달아서 인지 너무 단 맛이었어서, 보통 우유나 시럽을 제외한 오트밀 라테로 즐기는 것이 더욱 좋을 것 같습니다.

In terms of the coffee, we got the iced cold brew with cane sugar and oatmeal vanilla latte. I liked the cold brew as it wasn't too bitter but the iced vanilla latte with oat milk was too sweet maybe because the milk is sweet itself. Therefore, if you'd like to get the vanilla latte, I would recommend the regular milk or just an oat milk latte without any syrup.

• Butter block에서 빵 픽업 후 근처 공원에서 식사/ Pick up bread from Butter Block. You can enjoy coffee/bread in the park nearby.
• Niagara Falls로 이동; 혹은/ Enjoy the Niagara Falls; OR
• Canalside에서 산책 및 액티비티 (여름에는 오리배, 겨울의 경우 아이스링크장 이용 가능)/ Walk around or engage in activities that are happening at the Canalside
• 업스테이트 뉴욕에서만 만날 수 있는 캐나다 브랜드 Tim Hortons에서 더블더블 (설탕 2개 크림 2개가 들어간 커피 혹은 아이스 프라푸치노)도 먹어보기 (나이아가라 폭포 근처 및 버팔로 어디에서나 찾아볼 수 있음)/ If you are out of towners, try Tim Hortons' double double (double sugar, double cream coffee or frappuchino). Tim Hortons can be found everywhere in Buffalo and near the Falls.
